چکیده

L IVER TRANSPLANT patients often need large amounts of blood. I The presence of significant red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies in these patients complicates the blood bank's ability to provide the necessary blood products. In the first 1000 liver transplantations performed at our center, 13.7% of adults and 6.3% of children had significant RBC alloantibodies.2 We now have had 17 patients with significant RBC antibodies, rapid surgical blood need, and use of potentially incompatible blood untested for offending antigens. (Eight cases were noted previously.2) In this report we analyze our growing experience, characterize the cases according to outcome, and discuss our blood bank's approach to this problem.

Prevalence of Alloantibodies and Autoantibodies in Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia Patients

Background: The development of anti-red blood cell alloantibodies remains a major problem in transfusion of blood in thalassemia major patients. Also, Autoantibodies can result in clinical hemolysis and difficulty in cross-matching blood. We studied the frequency of red blood cell alloimmunization and autoimmunization among thalassemia patients who received regular transfusions in Ilam province...

Alloantibodies and Drug-Induced Immune Hemolytic Anemia in Liver Transplantation

Red blood cell alloantibodies can cause severe delayed hemolysis, despite immunosuppression which they receive posttransplantation. A female patient with Hepatitis C-related chronic liver disease reported to our center for liver transplantation. During preoperative evaluation, she was found to have significant red blood cell alloantibodies which gave rise to problems during pre transfusion comp...

A newly recognized blood group in domestic shorthair cats: the Mik red cell antigen.

BACKGROUND Naturally occurring alloantibodies produced against A and B red cell antigens in cats can cause acute hemolytic transfusion reactions. Blood incompatibilities, unrelated to the AB blood group system, have also been suspected after blood transfusions through routine crossmatch testing or as a result of hemolytic transfusion reactions. HYPOTHESIS Incompatible crossmatch results among...

Prevalence and specificities of red cell alloantibodies in transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia patients in Yazd

Abstract Background Multiple transfusions in thalassemia patients may lead to antibody production against blood group antigens and hemolytic transfusion reaction might occur. In this study, antibody screening test was performed by tube and gel methods to determine the prevalence and specificity of alloantibodies in thalassemia patients. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study, overa...

Red Blood Cell Transfusion in Patients With Autoantibodies: Is It Effective and Safe Without Increasing Hemolysis Risk?

BACKGROUND The therapeutic efficacy of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is highly debated because of speculations on the increased risk of transfusion reactions; yet it is a suggested adjuvant therapy in anemic patients with life-threatening hypoxemia. In this study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of RBC transfusions in AIHA patients. ...
